Why Lakrisha decided to focus only on LinkedIn

Like many independent business owners, Lakrisha was on all major social media platforms when she started her business. However, she quickly realized that LinkedIn was most aligned with her core values and generated more quality leads for her business.

After looking at the performance of her content on LinkedIn and taking her mental health needs into account (social media burnout is real), Lakrisha decided to focus solely on LinkedIn. She noticed that LinkedIn users are more serious about their personal development and are not simply looking for entertainment. This made it easier for her to connect with coaching clients who were willing to invest in themselves. It was clear that a LinkedIn business strategy would be most beneficial for her goals.

Common misconceptions about LinkedIn

Many entrepreneurs don’t invest their time in LinkedIn because it is an unfamiliar platform to them. Typically one or more of these common misconceptions prevent them from considering the platform a good fit for their business:

  1. It’s “the boring” platform
  2. It’s not for creatives
  3. You can’t be authentic on LinkedIn
  4. It’s only for job seekers

In Lakrisha’s experience, all of these misconceptions are untrue. LinkedIn can be a great marketing tool for independent business owners, and you can show up just as authentically as you do on other platforms.

Lakrisha’s business milestones on LinkedIn

Lakrisha started her coaching business seven years ago after she lost her corporate job. Due to her growth on LinkedIn, she’s been able to remain full-time in her business without needing to return to a 9-to-5 job. Within just a couple of years, Lakrisha was earning six figures a year thanks in large part to her marketing on LinkedIn.

Growing her brand presence on LinkedIn has also created opportunities for Lakrisha to diversify her revenue streams with a speaking career. Her content has reached thousands of people, which has created valuable social proof for her and her business. It’s not uncommon for Lakrisha to be recognized in public by grateful business owners who have benefited from her educational content.

On a personal note, Lakrisha has also had the freedom to pursue her physical and mental health goals due to the success of her business growth on LinkedIn.

Breaking free from vanity metrics on LinkedIn

It’s easy for entrepreneurs to get distracted by vanity metrics like those available on apps like Instagram and TikTok. While a viral post may help broaden visibility for your business, it won’t make the impact you’re looking for without a solid sales strategy in place.

You need a system for nurturing, tracking, and managing leads. For the first one to two years of your business, Lakrisha recommends focusing on these key things:

  1. A great positioning strategy
  2. A solid offering that works for a target audience
  3. Focusing on one platform and converting your audience into sales calls
  4. Learning how to convert sales calls into revenue
  5. Taking care of your clients and providing a fantastic service

When leveraging social media for direct sales, it makes more sense to focus on one social media platform instead of stretching yourself thin trying to keep up an active presence on each one. A LinkedIn business strategy is about building genuine connections with your audience so that you can convert them into real paying clients. This approach will allow you to break free from the vanity metrics that provide little long-term value for your business.

Lakrisha’s top LinkedIn business strategies

Each social media platform has its own rules of engagement, which means you need a specific strategy for each platform that you want to grow on. Lakrisha was able to grow quickly and organically on LinkedIn using these strategies:

  1. She made herself extremely valuable. LinkedIn content must be value-packed instead of flashy, which requires creators to think more critically about how they package their content.
  2. She learned how to write great headlines that drew people to her engage with her content.
  3. Her tips and advice were extremely specific and action-oriented; focusing on the “how” instead of the “what.”
  4. She packed her content with actionable tools that her audience could implement right away.
  5. She honed her copywriting skills so that her articles were well-written, conversational, and authentic to her tone of voice.

To improve your LinkedIn business strategy, start by considering the value you offer and how you can clearly provide it to your audience. Next, you need to get comfortable with showing up authentically on the platform.

Copywriting is king

The major difference between LinkedIn and other social media platforms is that video content has not taken over. On LinkedIn, copywriting is still king. It’s not about the flashiest video or most beautiful photo, it’s about what you have to say.

It’s essential to learn how to craft enticing headlines and copy that makes your audience want to keep reading—making LinkedIn the ideal platform for storytellers.

Lakrisha’s LinkedIn sales strategy

Lakrisha’s LinkedIn sales strategy consists of three layers.

1. Content marketing

Lakrisha posts on LinkedIn four to five times a week. She focuses on valuable content and offers more to her audience than she asks of them. Lakrisha’s approach is to mix in one “hard sale” post a week with her valuable content. Her content is a mix of her story, her original thoughts, client testimonials, and cast studies.

2. Connecting with your audience one-to-one

It’s not enough to simply post content. Lakrisha starts conversations with users who like or comment on her post and view her profile. She finds out about their goals and problems and connects them to the solutions she can offer them. From there, Lakrisha invites her warm leads to schedule a call with her.

3. Tracking and managing leads

When someone says “no” or “not right now” on an initial call, Lakrisha does not mark them off her list and move on. Instead, she circles back to them, sends them free resources, and keeps in touch. Lakrisha continues to nurture her LinkedIn leads and deliver consistent value until they are ready to say yes.

The biggest differentiator between businesses that succeed and the ones that fail

Lakrisha believes that ego is one of the biggest blockers to success in business. In her view, entrepreneurs who listen to the guidance of coaches and mentors, and are humble enough to know when they need help are more likely to succeed.

The second characteristic of successful people according to Lakrisha is having empathy for their audience. They are constantly trying to improve their content to provide ever greater value for their target audience. They incorporate audience feedback and adjust their content strategy based on their audience’s needs and requests.
